30 May 2011: Don’t frack with us! A rally against shale fracking
- This rally is about threats from fracking around London, Ontario. We will start to gather at 5:30pm, and community statements will start at 6pm. This rally will be at city hall (300 Dufferin st.) on Monday, May 30th. Fracking is a toxic, dangerous, and wasteful form of natural gas extraction that we may see . The water pollution is the worst of the fracking impacts. Tap water has become flammable after fracking is done to break gas out of nearby shale rock. A stew of toxic chemicals is pumped into each gas well, and radium is one of many underground substances that can be unintentionally released during this extraction.
19 May 2011: Rally – “Don’t Frack with Our Water”
- There will be an anti-fracking rally outside Holiday Inn Sarnia, at 1498 Venetian Blvd., in Point Edward. Major global players of the Shale Gas Industry are converging at the Holiday Inn to determine the future of Shale Gas in our province. We are protesting these plans in order to protect our water. Hydraulic Fracturing (aka FRACKING) is an extraction process that uses incredible amounts of water and numerous carcinogenic, endocrine disrupting, flammable, and otherwise poisonous chemicals to collect natural gas that lies in shale bodies below the ground. These chemicals are left behind in the process of drilling, and contaminate any water bodies they become a part of. We still can stop all of this from happening in Ontario.
14 May 2011: Stop Signs — Cars and Capitalism on the Road to Economic, Social and Ecological Decay
- On Saturday, May 14, at 6pm, at the East Village Arts Co-op (757 Dundas St.). The event is free, but donations towards the East Village Arts Co-op always are appreciated. This presentation and discussion is co-sponsored by Climate Justice London, the East Village Arts Co-op, From My Bottom Step, the People for Peace, Iconoclast Media, and the Amazon Collective.
11 May 2011: Protest Barrick speaking tour
- On Wednesday, May 11th, at 6pm, come hear the voices and stories of communities directly impacted by Barrick’s operations around the world. This event will take place at the Cross Cultural Learner Centre, in meeting room C (at 505 Dundas st.). Barrick Gold is the world’s largest gold mining company. This corporation takes advantage of weak regulations to rob indigenous peoples of their land and livelihoods, while destroying sensitive natural environments, and supporting brutal military and security operations. This event is sponsored by the Latin American-Canadian Solidarity Association. Here is the Facebook event posting.
6 May 2011: EVAC Japan Relief Film Series: Dreams
- On Friday May 6th, at 7pm, please join us at the East Village Arts Co-op (757 Dundas St.) Again, funds will be raised for NOUMINREN, an association of small scale farmers in Japan who are working on the ground to support the victims of March 11th Tohoku Earthquake/Tsunami and nuclear refugees of Fukushima. The organization is also providing support for its members to rebuild their ways of life and means of production while mobilizing to demand compensation from TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company), a company responsible for the ongoing nuclear crisis. This time we are screening Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams (1990), a beautiful fantasy/sci-fi which consists of eight short stories based on dreams Kurosawa saw.

An interactive workshop about these big questions will be held at the Black Shire pub (511 Talbot Street; see map) on Tuesday, May 3rd, at 7pm. Everyone is invited to an interactive workshop about this topic. Toward the end of the event, we will discuss how we can take action, to respond to the green scams that we’ll talk about. - On Friday, April 22nd, at 7pm. Please join us at the East Village Arts Co-op (757 Dundas St.) for a second film night to raise funds for the survivors of the earthquake/tsunami and nuclear refugees of Fukushima. This time we are screening Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, an animated epic that depicts the fierce struggle between humans and spirits of the forest as well as internal contradictions within both sides. The film also asks the philosophical question of what it means to live in the midst of antagonism between human civilization and the natural world and suggests the way in which it can end. All donations collected at this event will go to Japan Family Farmers Movement (NOUMINREN).

- At 3:00pm at Huron college, in room W112 (see map – http://tinyurl.com/4uavg45), the Beehive collective will be sharing more of their stories and art work. Like the infamous North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the heavy contested and now collapsed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) was one attempt to eliminate the remaining “barriers” to the free flow of money, goods, and services across borders in the Western Hemisphere, excluding Cuba, in an attempt to create ONE huge, integrated web of “open markets.” Although the FTAA itself, Free Trade agreements continue to threaten Human Rights and environmental protection. The Beehive will use the FTAA graphic to explore the bigger issues around Free Trade. The recent G20 Summit, and the ongoing rounds of cutbacks are among this series of connected issues.
